New images for the upcoming Natsume Yuujinchou OVA, Itsuka Yuki no Hi ni ( In A Certain Snowy Day)
I cannot tell you guys how much I will recommend Natsume’s Book of Friends if you’re looking for an anime that’s a tad more obscure but still really great
It’s a sweet, lovely anime that’s light on a lot of action but can get extremely bittersweet and it’s full of emotion, both good and bad
Fans of Japanese spirits and monsters that come in all shapes and sizes like myself will absolutely love the youkai and the bonds that develop between them and our somewhat out-of-place protagonist
Natsume himself is a soft-spoken and charming boy who can see the invisible spirits that most others can’t, and because of this, he’s been ostracised by others for most of his life which actually makes him quite lonely. The story develops his relationships as he slowly learns to build up trust with both humans and youkai after inheriting a book from his grandmother, with the comedic but secretly quite fearsome spirit Madara by his side
The series itself is normally episodic with each story featuring different spirits that are usually one-off characters which sometimes show up later. There are four seasons: “Natsume Yuujinchou,” “Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou,” “Natsume Yuujinchou San,” and finally, “Natsume Yuujinchou Shi.” All of them hold 13 episodes and each season never fails to disappoint and upholds the same great expectation given by the first original season. The soundtrack is beautiful and very fitting, masterfully accompanying both heartwarming and heartbreaking scenes.
And boy, does Yuki Midorikawa (the series’ mangaka) know how to turn them heartstrings and rip them out without making the entire thing seem convoluted or over-dramatic. (We all know how an angsty protagonist can grate on the nerves; not so in Natsume’s Book of Friends!)
I wholly suggest that if you’re looking for an anime that incorporates the supernatural into daily life with wonderful characters and some lovely episodic plotlines, this is one series that’s ultimately feel-good and exceptionally well-done.
